Derek von Gnechten

About the Farm

Derek von Gnechten operates a hydroponic farm in Mountain View on Hawaiʻi Island, growing fresh green onions and cilantro for local markets. His produce is sold through KTA Super Stores in Hilo and Puainako, providing island residents with locally grown ingredients that are staples in many of Hawaiʻi's diverse culinary traditions.

With extensive experience in greenhouse construction and hydroponic growing systems, Derek previously worked as a vocational agriculture instructor at the Arc of Hilo, helping adults with disabilities develop agricultural skills and transition into employment. Today, he brings that same knowledge and dedication to growing fresh, locally produced food for his community.

The Challenge

Changing rainfall patterns and increasingly prolonged dry spells have made water availability a major challenge for Derek's farm. Although his hydroponic operation relies on an 18,000-gallon rainwater catchment system, inconsistent rainfall has sometimes forced him to purchase costly water deliveries to maintain production.

Limited greenhouse space has also restricted his ability to meet growing demand. While Derek supplies green onions and cilantro to two KTA locations, expanding production requires additional protected growing space and a more reliable water supply.

How Mālama Da Farmer Grant Helped

The Mālama Da Farmer Grant supported Derek's efforts to expand his hydroponic growing infrastructure and improve water security. His proposed project included a new 24-by-48-foot greenhouse, an additional 10,000-gallon rainwater catchment tank, and gutters to collect and store rainwater.

The project also included materials for constructing hydroponic growing tables, along with growing media and nutrients to support increased production of green onions and cilantro. These improvements were designed to help Derek expand growing capacity while reducing the farm's vulnerability to periods of drought.

Impact

With additional greenhouse space and improved water storage, Derek's farm is better positioned to increase year-round production of locally grown green onions and cilantro while reducing reliance on expensive water deliveries.

The expanded infrastructure is intended to help Derek meet growing demand and potentially supply additional KTA locations, increasing access to fresh, locally grown produce for Hawaiʻi Island residents, including households using SNAP/EBT benefits.

By strengthening a small local farm's ability to produce food consistently, the project contributes to a more resilient and self-sufficient island food system.
