Hoʻolako Farmers Market

505 Ponahawai St., Hilo, HI 96720

The Ho‘olako Campus Farmers Market is a new community-centered market in Hilo, Hawai'i. Our goal is to create a welcoming space that supports local farmers and food producers while providing fresh, high-quality products to the surrounding community.

Ho‘olako Farmers Market celebrates Hawai‘i County agriculture by prioritizing locally grown and locally made products. While fresh produce must be from Hawai‘i County, we welcome food trucks and prepared food vendors who incorporate local ingredients wherever possible.

Hoʻolako Farmers Market Launch Update
April 29, 2026

Aloha kākou,

Mahalo nui to all of the vendors and community members who have supported the launch of the Hoʻolako Farmers Market and shared thoughtful feedback along the way. Your input has been instrumental in shaping the direction of this market.

We’d like to share an important update regarding our launch timeline. After careful consideration and internal discussions, we have made the decision to postpone the opening of the market until we are able to accept SNAP benefits.

Ensuring that healthy, locally grown food is accessible and affordable to our entire community is a core priority, and one that aligns deeply with our mission. While we know this delay may be disappointing, it is a step we feel is necessary to build a market that truly serves everyone.

We have already begun the SNAP authorization process. Although we are actively moving it forward, the timeline is dependent on federal processing, so we are not yet able to confirm an exact opening date. At this time, we estimate that SNAP could be in place in approximately six weeks, barring any unforeseen delays.

As things stand, Sunday remains the most likely day for our initial launch, with the goal of expanding to two market days as the market grows.

We are committed to keeping our vendors and community updated regularly so everyone can plan accordingly. Mahalo for your patience, understanding, and continued support as we work to create a successful, sustainable market for Hawaiʻi Island.

With appreciation,
The Hoʻolako Team

  • All vendors are required to have a current General Excise (GE) License as issued by the State of Hawai‘i.

  • While liability insurance is not required at this time, we strongly encourage vendors to carry coverage. Insurance helps protect your business, your customers, and your products. Some reasons to consider liability insurance include:

      • Product liability protection – Covers claims if a customer becomes ill from your produce, prepared foods, or beverages. This can include issues like rat lungworm (angiostrongyliasis), which can affect raw leafy greens, watercress, or other local crops.

      • On-site accidents – Covers injuries that occur at your booth or involving your equipment, such as slips, trips, or burns from cooking demos.

      • Peace of mind for vendors – Protects your farm or business assets in case of lawsuits or claims.

      • Hawai‘i County’s tropical climate and high rainfall can increase risk for slips, pest issues, and contamination, making coverage especially valuable.

      • Portability – Vendors may obtain coverage through our portal. Insurance purchased through the portal is portable and remains valid wherever the vendor operates.
