We’re here to end hunger here at home on Hawaiʻi Island, and statewide.

A trusted part of the community

As the federally designated food bank for Hawaiʻi County, The Food Basket strives to make Hawaiʻi County a model for food security and sustainability by being a trusted leader in safe, reliable, and high quality food distribution on Hawaiʻi Island. In addition, we administer the DA BUX program statewide to make fresh, local produce more available to SNAP recipients while supporting farmers in Hawaiʻi - a win-win!

Our Story

The Food Basket was founded in 1989 to address hunger on Hawaiʻi Island. Over the last few decades, we have grown our programs to serve keiki to kūpuna with geographical coverage across the island through the hard work of our dedicated staff, volunteers, and local partner agencies.

As a founding member of the Hawaiʻi Good Food Alliance, The Food Basket partners with organizations statewide to address food insecurity, and to develop sustainable food systems that support local food producers and increase equitable access to fresh, healthy food to support individual, family, and community wellbeing across Hawaiʻi Island and beyond.

Mahalo to our thousands of volunteers who have helped us year in and year out, without whom we could not do what we do. Each and every one of you has made a real difference.
