L & L Livestock Company

About the Farm

& L Livestock Company is a grass-fed beef operation in the Hāmākua region of Hawaiʻi Island, operated by Linus and Jacob Tavares. The ranch is dedicated to raising locally produced beef while practicing responsible land stewardship through managed grazing.

By integrating livestock production with sustainable pasture management, L & L Livestock works to improve soil health, control invasive vegetation, and strengthen Hawaiʻi Island's local food system. Their approach reflects a commitment to caring for the ʻāina while providing nutritious, locally raised beef to the community.

The Challenge

Expanding a grass-fed beef operation requires significant investment in fencing, water systems, and other essential infrastructure. For L & L Livestock, rising material costs and uncertainty surrounding federal agricultural funding created financial barriers to expanding its grazing areas.

Without adequate fencing, the ranch faced limitations in implementing rotational grazing, increasing pasture productivity, and expanding local beef production. These challenges made it difficult to grow the operation while maintaining sustainable land management practices.

How Mālama Da Farmer Grant Helped

Through the Mālama Da Farmer Grant, L & L Livestock Company received funding to support the installation of essential fencing infrastructure, helping the ranch expand its grazing areas and strengthen livestock management. This investment helped offset rising construction costs and provided the infrastructure needed to support more effective pasture rotation.

By improving access to additional grazing land, the grant supports the ranch's efforts to increase local grass-fed beef production while promoting healthier pastures, responsible land stewardship, and long-term agricultural sustainability.

Impact

The Mālama Da Farmer Grant helped L & L Livestock overcome a major financial barrier to expanding its ranching operation. By investing in fencing infrastructure, the ranch is better positioned to manage larger grazing areas, improve pasture rotation, and support healthier soil and vegetation.

These improvements lay the groundwork for increased local beef production while supporting responsible land stewardship. Managed grazing can also help control invasive vegetation and reduce wildfire fuel loads, benefiting both the ranch and surrounding communities. Through this investment, L & L Livestock is working toward a more resilient agricultural operation and a stronger local food supply for Hawaiʻi Island.
