DA BOX

Ho`olaha Ka Hua “DA BOX” is a community supported agriculture (CSA) program. Hawai`i Food Basket purchases Hawai`i Island grown produce from our local farmers and resells to customers island-wide. Each week of produce consists of a minimum of seven items, generally one to two fruits and five to six vegetables.

DA BOX was created to both support local farmers and to provide affordable access to fresh, Hawai`i Island grown produce.

FAQ:

How does this program work?

The Food Basket is operating an island-wide Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA) for all residents of Hawai`i. Utilizing our existing distribution network, customers receive at minimum seven different types of in-season, local produce delivered to a site near them once a week. With all of our consumers paying in advance, farmers improve their cash flow, minimal waste is purchased, and we can offer all residents a very competitive price. Be assured that all of your dollars will go toward 100 percent local produce.

Is this program open to everyone?

Yes! Part of our purpose for this program is to increase our food sustainability by purchasing more from our local farmers. To do this, we’ll need everyone’s kokua. No eligibility or paperwork is required to qualify. If you are designating someone else to pick up your produce or have other special accommodations, some paperwork will be necessary. Everyone who participates will increase the total amount of local fruit and vegetable purchases on Hawai`i Island. It’s healthy for you and our economy.

Why are there different prices for EBT customers?

At The Food Basket, we are committed to assisting our residents to improve their lives. This commitment extends to making sure we do not make one cent of profit off of our EBT friends and neighbors.

How do I pay?

Part of our commitment to farmers on the island are our efforts to improve their cash flow. Leveraging our buying power, we can pay our farmers partially in advance on their promise of the delivery of goods. Farmers often times must front the entire season’s costs without knowledge of the growing season and its challenges. Thus, we are asking that each participant helps us help our farmers by paying the full amount in advance.

Cash or checks are always welcome. If you wish to charge, please use the accompanying button to access PayPal. For our EBT customers, federal regulations allow only two weeks of food to be purchased in advance. Please call us at 933-6030 and ask for Haunani, produce coordinator, who will help you with EBT/SNAP payments.

Can I get a refund if I need to cancel a scheduled pick-up?

Yes, you can cancel a pick-up and receive a refund if you notify The Food Basket by 4 p.m. on the Thursday before the scheduled pick-up. Call Haunani at 933-6030 or e-mail haunani@hawaiifoodbasket.org. We cannot credit for canceled produce after that deadline or missed pick-ups. Bags that are not canceled and not picked up will be forfeited and donated to a family or individual in need of emergency food.

How do I know where my pick-up site is if I sign up online?

We have pick-up sites all over the island on various days and at different times during the week.  To figure out which one is best for your situation, please give us a call or contact us via email and we’ll get you set-up.

Do you have work-site deliveries for DA BOX?

Yes, we do! If you have 5 colleagues who’d like to order DA BOX, we can make a weekly work-site delivery.

If you have any questions or want to participate in this program, feel free to contact us. We would love to hear from you.
